We don’t know a lot about Louis Chauvin- he was very popular as a ragtime pianist but didn’t know how to write music, so most of his own compositions went unrecorded. One that, luckily enough, didn’t is called Heliotrope Bouquet from 1907. Supposedly, he started the song and got too sick and died before he could finish it, so a friend of his, Scott Joplin (yep) wrote the rest and transcribed it for him. I was nuts about Scott Joplin as a kid and this is the earliest song I remember loving besides for ones by the Beach Boys (stay tuned).

Ragtime came out of a few different types of music, one of which was the cakewalk. The cakewalk dance originated among American black slaves who were making fun of the elaborate ballroom dances the plantation owners frequently put on.

I was trying to figure out why this song sounded so familiar then I remembered it was sung by the Swingle Singers and featured in the pilot of Glee
